My teen’s first bank account — and a surprisingly great experience

Opening a bank account for my son felt like one of those milestones that sneaks up on you as a parent. He’s 15 now, and we both agreed it was time he had some financial independence. After asking around and doing a bit of research, I went with BCU Financial. Their youth account program seemed well thought out, and now that we’ve been using it for a few months, I can confidently say it’s been an excellent choice.

What I appreciated most was how easy they made the process. From the moment we walked in, the staff were kind, patient, and genuinely helpful. My son got his own member card and set up his mobile banking right away. Now he checks his balance, tracks spending, and is learning how to manage his money — all on his own. It’s been a fantastic tool to help him understand budgeting and responsibility in a hands-on way.

As a parent, I had the option to stay on as an approving signer, but I decided to give him some autonomy — and it’s been great watching him step up. The platform is easy to navigate, and it gives just the right amount of independence while still feeling safe.

If anyone’s on the fence about where to open a youth account, I’d absolutely recommend BCU Financial. It’s not just another banking product — it’s a well-designed experience for families.
